Information & Things to Do in Struisbaai

Think of the southernmost of Africa and the names  L’Agulhas, Struisbaai and Suiderstrand jump to your mind. Not so many people are familiar with the area but the ones visiting, will experience an interesting and exciting place full of surprises.

The Cape L’Agulhas Lighthouse has been anchored to the skyline for 166 years where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The beautiful ruggedly coast provides endless photographic opportunities   and a boardwalk from the Tower to the southernmost tip makes it easy for all to enjoy the scenery. Adventurous visitors can climb the 71 steps to the top of the Tower and admire the panoramic view. The fauna and flora take your breath away and it is worth the while to put a day aside for hiking the  Spookdraai trail where you may find wildlife animals like duiker and steenbok.

Struisbaai boasts with a 14 kilometre long flat white beach where one and all can enjoy a day out. The beach is safe for swimming but fishermen also try their luck and many have met their match! Whether you want to swim, stroll, run, fish or play, the beach has space for everybody’s needs.  Aquatic related activities like power boating, canoeing, jet skiing and kite surfing are extremely popular. The quaint harbour is an absolute delight to fishermen and you can get fish fresh from the sea when the boats anchor in the harbour.  The whales and dolphins also pay visits to the lovely bay and what an experience to watch the whales with their calves playing.

Suiderstrand is remote and quiet and the only sounds you will hear are the sea and the sea birds. Beautifully set in the Agulhas National Park, the area is surrounded by sea and bush. If you need peace and quiet, this is where you will find it.

However, if you want more, the restaurants in Struisbaai and L’Agulhas will meet all your needs: seafood or steak, pizza or pasta, coffee or cappuccino – your wish is their command.  Gift shops will tempt you to spend a dime or more.

Nearby activities on offer are a gholf course, 4x4 trails, museums, art and craft shops, wine estates with wine tasting facilities and restaurants. Worth a visit is De Hoop Nature Reserve which is a well known nature paradise.
